Fears for the tiers
A weak global economy plus consolidation in the airline industry has shrunk the traffic of many smaller airports. But, discovers Martin Roebuck, they are fighting back

Nick Barton, who originally trained in estate management and as a chartered surveyor, has been at Stansted since 2005. He has had various roles at the airport, including strategy solutions, planning, commercial and business development. He became managing director in 2010.
Winning the top slot
Having been traditionally confined to secondary gateways, low-cost carriers are making greater inroads into primary airport operations. But as the shift continues, keeping an eye on cost will remain a chief focus. Keith Mwanalushi reports
